Shining Light in the Wine Scene

Written by:

A few weeks ago I went to the Good Food and Wine Show here in Melbourne.  Upon entering the show to say that I was disappointed in the overall scene would be an understatement.  It was smaller than usual, and seemingly overtaken by large retailers such as Myer, Fisher and Paykell and Citibank.  The smaller retailers and producers were tucked into little shoebox size stalls that meant there was no room for anyone to actually get through the crowd to sample anything much at all.

I wandered through “Cheese Alley” and nothing was for sale only order – which was sad and disappointing.  Walking out the other end there like a light at the end of a long dark tunnel was the Barossa Valley Wine Aisle.  Alleluia!

a quick stop at the Tsharke stand and I was on my way to wine heaven.  Their Montepulciano was fruity and full flavoured a step away from the traditional Italian style Monte’s.

Then next door was the new and trendy Domaine Day stall, Henry Goodwin winemaker and accomplished salesman held court.  I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the wines I tried their, definitely living up to their names of “One Serious…” the Pinot Noir 08 was full and rich and like a party on my palette.  Followed by the Lagrien ’10 – i have never tried this variety before and I think it may be one of my new favourites. Deep plum flavours, with a hint of herbaciousness lift the nose.  Beautiful served with a duck or rabbit dish.

Check out Domaine Day if you are travelling the Barossa Valley, I’m sure Henry and friends would welcome the visit.  http://www.australianexplorer.com/tourist_attractions/9134606/profile.htm
