What's your morning like?

Written by:

My old morning routine, was not a routine. It usually consisted of hitting snooze three or four times then screeching out of bed running down the hallway and waking kids up to get ready for school. Breakfast on the run, barely time to run a brush through my hair and the kids hair let alone take a leisurely shower, before running out the door in a mad panic late again for school and work.

Fast forward five years to current day, since implementing a habitual morning routine everything runs a lot more smoothly. My work day morning now looks more like this:

I rise at 5am – even on the days that I am at home, setting the same rising and bed time helps set your sleep patterns and make you well rested.

I put the kettle on while I get dressed for the day.

Pour coffee then grab my journal and write my reflections from the day before and my hopes for the day to come. Doing this brings clarity to ideas I may have had through the day or a chance to discover meaning to things that may have been on my mind. A gratitude journal brings life into perspective and focuses on the things in life that I do have and means I no longer focus on the negative.

I grab my notebook and diary and fill in my MUST do list, the three things that will be done first before anything else. As I am a visual learner I put the top three inside a picture of a cloud to remind me of their importance. They will also be printed in a brighter colour to make them stand out to me.

I enjoy my coffee and breakfast.

Then I head out the door to work.

On the days I don’t have work outside the house I do all this however I add in waking the kids for school and sending them off for the day.

The things that I do NOT do for the first hour I’m awake is check emails, check social media, or anything else that takes my focus from my routine and my needs for the day. On a good day all of these wait until after 9am (or old fashioned business hours)

Taking this time for me to get my day put down on paper and having a list of clearly defined goals gives me piece of mind through the day and if there are any surprises later in the day I know that my top three must do’s have already been taken care of in the morning.
